Yes. The bauxite gets shipped to NZ to be smelted as NZ has none. They have been smelting Australian bauxite for 50+ years, which is why I said it would be bad for NZ smelters if Australia started using solar to smelt the bauxite themselves instead of shipping to NZ.

Traditionally NZ was using their plentiful hydro power to smelt bauxite from Australia. If it makes more sense to smelt in Australia, the smelters in NZ will be idle.

This is clever, but would be bad for the NZ aluminium smelters.

Then they would have to be honest about how much the actual electricity costs and how much is just padded admin fees to justify the increases...
