There is some nuance. The deal isn’t guaranteed, for one. They could release him at the end of spring and he gets a smaller payout. It also changes his pay scale in the minors. Maybe most crucially, it keeps him on the 40 through the winter, so he maintains employment and can stay on a valid visa.
