The beautiful Iolani Palace, first e executive building to have lights, telephone in the world. King Kalamaua was very progressive. The statue is of his sister, Queen Liliuokalani who followed him after his untimely death.

3100 acres of coffee bushes is pretty impressive. Kauai Coffee is an industrial level operation. I love how when the sugar cane agriculture crashed, they stepped in and created this wonderful enterprise. The old mills that processed the cane( I remember the vinegry smell)now process the beans.

I lost my youngest son 4 months ago. It was a weepy time for me today (It happens out of nowhere) but while getting rid of some old files I found an envelope from 2006 with a note he sent me. Such a gift.

During its 5 year occupation, the newspapers went underground. Mimeograph stencils and machines were illegal, but writers were able to get news off the BBC on REAL news & smuggle in the tools to print.
