Why do we have, or need, hegemons though? Great question, no?
One thing most people don't understand is that we in the US enjoy greater wealth funded by other countries because they assume we are a stable and relatively friendly hegemon.

This über-liberal self-back-patting is cute. Being a happy vassal is losing your dignity. Trump is just the Marla Singer for Europe - just brute, crude and boorish. But the dignity was lost a long time ago. So if Belgian Prime Minister speaking makes you feel better and gives you hope...
