Awesome. Thanks Alyssa. I'm trying to get across the sounds through a suit in the ship where the air pressure is low so sounds are a little bit wrong.

Off topic, I've started reading this thing, below. And although it's early, the writing is absolute 🔥 whoever the author is I highly recommend them

She started at an urgent flashing light from her wrist. The suit. 66 percent battery. Hours not days. “Okay, to the Bridge,” and set off back to the ladder. She really had got to grips with the ladder. Climb, open the hatch, wait for pressure to equalise, step out, push the panel. March. Clamp clamp clamp. The Bridge door was closed, but the emergency pressure release worked despite the lack of power. Hauldralics pulled and the door parted in with a thin wheeze before her. Through the viewport which was thankfully intact ahead, she saw the distant stars. No Tartarus. Of course the Rec could be holding the ship five minutes away and she’d never see it from anywhere on Thalassa even were the entire ship made of glass.

Kaili’s smile was wide. “Since we are in Engineering, can we make it official now?” Elara waved her closer. Kaili obliged. When she reached the middle of the room, Elara raised her hand. Kaili stopped. “Kaili Kael, with the crew of the Heavy Freight Vessel Tartarus to bear witness, I hereby bestow upon you the Field Commission of Trainee Technician, pending corporate review should we ever return to Earth. Welcome to the crew. You belong to Toren now.” Ben spoke up from behind the girl, “May God have mercy on your soul.” Elara took a moment to look around at the five gathered there, while Kaili bounced on the balls of her feet, beaming. The crew were a scrappy mess. But they'd done it! “Enough fun and frolics, let's talk to our digital pal shall we?” She pulled her comm from her pocket, tapping the open mic. “You there Rec?” The voice came back, tinny through the small speaker. “Captain. I’d expected your call earlier. I’m afraid you will be docked for the damage to the company equipment.” Her brows knitted together. “I don’t care about that. You know that we have control—” The Rec cut her off. “Captain Browne, while I appreciate your call, your rebellion is, let me find an appropriate word, cute.

“Tell me why you want me in Engineering so urgently.” There was a pause before The Rec answered. “Logic and protocol demands it.” “That’s not all of it.” “It is.” “I’m going to deck two.” She turned left and started the slow plod across the deck. “I must insist that you continue to Engineering and restart the ship.” She smiled to herself without stopping and⁰ continued down the corridor. “I’ve started walking now. Sucks when you lose control of the situation huh?” “I’m afraid that this is not a moment for levity, Captain. I will be unable to continue providing assistance if you insist on not following protocol.” She continued on, passing the exposed pipe work that lined the corridor, here and there she noticed crystalised water droplets on the pipes. “You are starting to sound a little frayed there, Rec. I can continue on my own if you’re gonna keep being a bitch about it.” “Captain, I must insist that you stop treating me as an adversary. My only concern is maximising the potential preservation of life.”

Toren joined a small chorus of “Amen’s”, a deep, shuddering breath slipped out. He turned to Ben and nodded his thanks. Ben nodded back, wiping his tear lined face and giving a gentle smile. From his toolbelt, he pulled out the bottle he’d temporarily displaced his wrench for. Elara leaned in, “What do we have here?” He smiled, looked at the label, “Despite the branding, this is actually the finest single malt Scotch you’ll ever drink.” “That’s interesting, because the white label just says Whisky and the bottle is plastic. The hallmark of quality.” “Don’t let the label fool you kid, this is Glen Toren whisky. The plastic brings out the subtle earthy notes.” Ben drifted their way. “You didn’t bring cups?” “Cups! You kids nowadays!” The lid opened with a satisfying crack at the slight twist of his fingers. A shock of sour stink hit him in the eyes. He raised the bottle in the direction of the gurney, “Never while on duty.” He took a gulp, amazed at the instant fire that raced across his tongue, lighting up his throat and chest. Elara reached out and he passed the bottle, raising a salute before necking a mouthful. She didn’t cough or choke, just a slight rasping wheeze gave away the potent liquid’s impact.

But, I think you have apologised to the wrong person Mr O’Connell.” He leaned forward a little, catching the Ukrainians eye. “Sorry Katya.” The woman, Katya, didn’t acknowledge it and moved away. The sound of springs creaking told Ben she’d gone to bed. O’Connell shrugged. “Some people. Well, Caul, I’d like to know when we can speak to the Captain? We haven’t been told where we are going or how long we are supposed to put up with this—” he gestured around the cluttered room “—mess” Caul gave him a nod. “I shall ask her to come visit in the morning. I know she is tied up helping the young girl—” He cut in. “Kaili? Yeah I was her hanging around with that grease monkey earlier. Guess she’s too good for us now huh. No surprise she gets the special treatment, while we get the dungeon.” Ben’s anger flared again. “She’s a child. It says a lot that she’d spend time with strangers rather than here with you.”

My big quest for the week is to do a semi-detailed breakdown of each scene in Statues and then use the insights to check on the big picture, what is there, what is missing, what should go.

Little did I know I'd end up with a spreadsheet for my damned book!

Toren He hadn’t slept for more than ten minutes at a time. He’d been to the toilet twice and a third time was calling, not because he needed, but because he wanted to go back out into the corridor and check on them! Scratching his chin in frustration he looked at his watch, the green digits cast a strange glow in the darkness. Two thirty two. “Dammit!” He stood up, rubbing his arms against the cold. “Lights on.” He shielded his eyes a heartbeat after the sudden brightness blinded him. Reaching for his coveralls, he had his foot half way down the leg before he stopped himself. “They’re fine dumbass!” How many times did he have to tell himself?

Elara Her thoughts were a whirlwind as she stalked the corridor on Deck 4, boots clanging. How was she supposed to keep the crew busy for three months? She mumbled to herself “This is too fucked!” There wasn’t time yet to figure it out, to worry that she wouldn’t be getting back to Miranda on time, that, her new ship? Who knows! The Galaxy was caught up in this outbreak. Focus. Right now, the Tartarus and her crew were the only concern. She spotted Caul, the other woman looking downwards as she walked, shoulders hunched slightly. She had a coffee in her hand, barely glancing up as Elara passed. “You okay Caul?” Dumb question! A burst of bitter laughter was her earned reward. “Are you asking as FO, or…” Elara tried a smile, but knew it wasn’t sparkling. “Both. Either.” Caul gave a little shrug, straightening a little, her eyes flicked to Elara’s and then away again. “I…I just need to spend some time alone I think.” She nodded towards the break room. “Those two are…too much right now.” With that she turned and headed to the elevator.

The comm clicked off. No “goodbyes” or “thank you’s” from Toren. Caul stood, stretching up. Then leaned casually against the chair back. “I don’t know why Cap tolerates that man.” Elara wheeled around bristling, fighting to keep anger down. “You can’t be serious?” Caul shrugged. “I don’t know. He is a good engineer, yes. But if you ever have to actually deal with him he is a complete prick. I guess you would not see this? What with you being good friends.” Her tone, the casually brushing down of the flight suit, the lean, all lit a fuse. Elara straightened. “Yeah, he is an amazing engineer. Yeah, he’s my friend. So what?” Caul slid back down into her seat, hands up in mock-surrender, that damned grin ever present. She felt herself shaking slightly as she fought to stay calm. “I tell you what, Caul. When you’ve been floating around in space keeping this tin can running for nearly two decades, maybe then you’ll understand. Toren is a fucking legend. So watch your Goddamn tone, or we will have a problem. Got me?” Caul placed a hand on her heart. “Apologies FO. No offense intended.” Elara wanted to flush that arrogant face out of an airlock. She stamped down on herself — again. She let out a breath she hadn’t thought she was holding and said,
