I worked on prototypes of "this kind of future" 25 years ago... we assumed they would help people, not load up their carts with more crap.

Wall Street has rebranded this trend as “agentic commerce.” The process collapses discovery, research, and checkout into one conversation — the AI agent tells you what you need, and you buy without additional follow-ups. You might be researching sleeping bags and stoves for a camping trip, and the AI could also suggest a four-person tent that matches your family’s size and needs. Retailers are quickly launching this technology because the benefits are clear: fewer tabs, fewer drop-offs, and a faster path from recommendation to purchase. New startup companies are making the transition possible — including AV portfolio company Lily AI,* a platform that bridges the gap between brand language and customer language to help unlock millions in new retail revenues.
