Have learnt from Andrea Cau that French palaeontologist Philippe Taquet died yesterday, aged 85. Taquet published a substantial amount on north African and French #dinosaurs, including Ouranosaurus, spinosaurids, the dromaeosaurid Pyroraptor and much more.

When I attended the conference in Fukui two months ago, I saw one of the Korean dinosaur enthusiasts there. I remember him because he appreciated my contribution to the research on fossils from his area, when a monograph about the Jinju Formation blattodeans was published. (1/2)

People always draw Juvenile T. rex attacked by Nanotyrannus, so I did something different.

Why do people do this?

An ornithischian, perhaps a thescelosaurid or maybe an elasmarian, with what I'm unlovingly and unflatteringly calling "Skeksi face," with all due apologies to Brian Froud and the Henson Company.

#sciart, actually. No, really.

Quick sketch of Nanotyrannus lethaeus, based on Jane, ~45 minutes (slowed down towards the end because my cat likes to climb onto my lap when I'm using my drawing monitor.)

This time, prompted by nothing in particular (he lied) is the question of ontogenetic metaplastic transformation.

Let's talk about #Pachycephalosaurus. #Dinosaur #Ontogeny #Paleontology Bri'is #Palaeontology #SciArt #metaplasia

The amount of AI generated art in slides at this conference, primarily used by older scientists, is killing me. Scientists please. Don’t use these ai platforms to make your figures or slides. They look bad and I have yet to see them meaningfully improve the message of talks.

For most participants, the real meaning of evidence-based analysis in peer-reviewed literature hasn't set in yet. Whether they're arguing for the "right" conclusion or not, their goal is to win an argument and defend their feelings and aesthetic preferences.

When these kids argued (and will continue to argue) about Nanotyrannus or Spinosaurus or whatever else, the actual evidence isn't really in play. They take sides based on aesthetics—on the mental image of the prehistoric world that they prefer to envision.

Let me attempt to articulate something. As a former participant in the "teenage nerds talk about dinosaurs online" scene, I think some of us who follow paleontology as adults or do dinosaur stuff professionally care too much about the specifics of what's being discussed there. (cont'd)

Now we call a tyrannosaur on background as Nanotyrannus lethaeus.
