TLDR: When Walmart comes to town, two things happen: 1) their low prices force mom and pop stores out of business, and 2) people eventually earn less because Walmart pays workers low wages.
"Walmart makes the places it operates in poorer than they would be if it had never shown up at all. Sometimes consumer prices are an incomplete, even misleading, signal of economic well-being."

North Carolina’s Atrium Health says it will forgive the debts of 11,500 people — less than a week after NBC News reported that the company has aggressively pursued former patients’ medical debts, placing liens on their homes to collect on bills.
