Genuinely though. If we stop acting like we *have* to fall into gender essentialism in order to simplify the concept of transness to young readers, we'll come up with better, more creative trans stories that they don't have to spend their adulthood unlearning.

Whenever I read trans stories that are all "I realized I'm a boy because I like superheroes more than princesses" I'm disappointed at this message we're sending.

Liking superheroes isn't proof you're a guy. It's proof that you're a huge nerd.

The essay continues: “When I see representations of queer people of color in the mainstream, it always felt like something was missing.” Panel 3: Cin being overcrowded by fantastical characters, a robot, a gorilla in a spacesuit, a cat princess, and a woman with a sword. The essay continues: “Especially in stories of happy queer escapism.” Panel 1: Continuing: “Their stories often revolve around their white queer friends,” A white woman points to herself as her other hand holds a Black woman’s hand. Who is off to the side. The white woman says “This story’s about ME.” While the Black woman says “I’m here too.” Panel 2: Continuing: “They’re stripped of cultural specificity” a white woman shares a meal with a dark skinned hijabi woman. The white woman has a burger while the hijabi woman holds chopsticks, ready to eat her noodles. There's a frustrating dichotomy placed on being Chinese Indonesian where people assume your east asian-ness somehow undercuts how southeast asian you are. And you have to awkwardly tell them the indo government mandated the erasure of your culture and America funded the slaughter of your people here

We look at one of the kids holding a practice lion dance head. Taonui: That's Robert "Robbie" Lai. Future Chinoy Broadway star, current head of our lion. We see a diagram of Taonui lifting up Robert effortlessly vs Robert struggling to lift Taonui. Conner: Why are you usually the lion's tail? Taonui: Robbie's not strong enough to lift me. Taonui laughs off his exhaustion. Taonui: Being a tall tail is a pain. I gotta crouch real low to make up for my height. Conner: I could totally lift you. Taonui: Is that a challenge? We look over to a girl at the drums. Taonui: So over there is Hillary Chang. Our Taiwanese Malaysian drummer. She can fill in on any role, but her heart's in percussion. Hillary's got an ear for rhythm. Taonui nonchalantly continues. Taonui: Her nenek wants to adopt me. Conner: WHAT? Conner looks on to Taonui off panel Taonui: Hillary's grandma is an aquarist. She's got this huge tank of catsharks. Flashback to a young Taonui looking into the tank, wide eyed and amazed. Taonui: First time I saw it, she could tell I was obsessed.

My gender expression is that when I'm trying really hard to boy mode I'm read as a butch/tomboy but when I'm having a lazy day and wearing shorts + a pastel colored outfit I get the "sir" treatment.

Apparently my spectrum is butch to feminine gay man
