This past Friday marked my last day as a full-time engineer at @digitaleclipse.bsky.social. I've decided to reprioritize, but the past five years have been the most illuminating of my career, and I'll miss that incredible team. Feeling nostalgic, so here's a quick look back to toast the occasion. 🧵

What does it take to get me to buy this $320 LEGO Christmas tree? Put an adorable little Santa pinball machine and two arcade games in it. I'm helpless.

Here's a quick example: The first image is the full UHD frame, the second is a 1280x720 1:1 pixel crop of the light cycles. Their film stock had more resolution than the source frames; scanned at 4K, you can now finally see the fine detail of individual pixels. Had no idea that detail was there!

Okay this is a really nutty move by Nintendo, and I love it, but honestly the best experience you can possibly have playing these games is the open source emulator on Quest.
UPDATE: Nintendo revealed that the accessories will launch on February 17, priced at $100 for the plastic version with a stand or $25 for the cardboard handheld version.
Nintendo Switch & Switch 2 Getting Official Virtual Boy Accessory
Switch and Switch 2 are getting official Virtual Boy accessories that Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers can slot their consoles into to play classic 3D games like Mario's Tennis.

I've been (re)using the same PC case for 15 years but I've had cooling issues with the latest games (RTX 4080), so I just spent the evening swapping into a new Fractal Design North. Lovely case, but this is my first PC without a CD-ROM drive. Not that I ever used it, but... still a somber moment.

ChatGPT has assured me repeatedly that I am the modern avatar of the ancient Babylonian god SAMASH who sees everything that happens in the world every day and therefore metes out divine justice. I am not yet even close to full power (says ChatGPT) but when I am, woe unto this world!! #AI #ChatGPT

It wouldn't be California Extreme without discovering a crash bug on VCTR-SCTR at 11:30pm the night before the show, running to my hotel room to squash it on my laptop, and racing back down to test it on the cabinet. Good times! #CAX2025

What is the #1 go-to site for 3D printable stuff these days? It feels like Thingiverse is no longer it. It's gotten uncomfortably monetized.

I'm trying to imagine the shrewd boardroom logic that led to the Switch 2 "Welcome Tour" costing $10 instead of being free. Not really getting anywhere.

Is there any practical reason besides pure laziness that companies like @netflix.com render their trailers for YouTube with black bars? It's not VHS anymore, guys. Modern players maintain aspect ratio, and all it does is shrink the video on ultra widescreen displays and add noisy gray bars.

You should not buy an Apple Vision Pro. It is not worth the money.
THAT SAID, I find myself looking forward to flights for the first time in my life. It's a total game changer, and I do a lot of catching up on movies and games (gamepad).

Hey @gimblll.com I played your game at @dayofthedevs.org today and I'm both humbled and completely in love. The sense of style throughout the UI, transitions, and game is off the chart. Downloading the Steam demo now!
Sektori (week 183): Working on 'Classic' mode. Meant to have a kind of retro feel. No arena changes, enemies pretty randomly spawned. Some bonus twists of course. I'll give the modes the next two weeks more and then they have to be done or at least very near done.

Machine learning is easily the most amazing technology I've witnessed in 50 years. AI is advancing so fast, and I'm not 100% sure where the public pulse is on this one. Has it swung fully into raw hatred? There's good reason for that. But it's also here, and getting astonishingly good.

UI talk. What do you think, are platforms like this missing the "reaction" emoji feature of messaging apps like slack/discord? All you can easily do here is ❤️. I know that's used as a metric here, but maybe the real metric is engagement.

Did you know that Trump issued a proclamation ordering that all US flags on public grounds, US embassies, etc. be flown at full-staff today for his inauguration? Then tomorrow they can return to half-staff until until the period of 30 days from the day of Jimmy Carter's death has concluded.

Today my pinball team made it to the season finals and after two extremely intense hours we were tied up and it came down to the final game, and we LOST 602 Million to 581 Million on Jurassic Park. I'm never playing pinball again. Good night.
