I wrote this piece in 2023, naming EA's Respawn as one of the studios that has benefited from allowing employees to work remotely.

Now, following big layoffs last month and this week's return-to-office announcement, Respawn may become a very different company.

Video game companies are infamous for trying to avoid and mitigate risk at all cost. With industry growth flattening and development budgets swelling, aren't the stakes too high for these companies to rely on genAI? Are the potential savings really worth that risk? www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

In recent weeks, video game publishers Take-Two and EA both warned investors about potential "reputational" risks to the use of gen-AI in games. It's a problem that all game companies will soon need to confront: Players hate genAI.

Eight years ago, Hitman developer IO Interactive was bleeding so much money that Square Enix paid to get rid of it.

Now it's one of the largest privately owned video-game companies in the world, with 500 employees.

I spoke to IO's CEO about how that happened: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

The stuff coming out about post Halo Bungie exec decisions is wild. Divorced from reality.
Just watched @bellular.bsky.social ‘s video about bungie and it’s made me realize something that we’ve known for a while; execs are ruining media. Devs told the higher ups Marathon needed PVE and they were ignored. Same with Suicide Squad needing more time. I wonder how many more times it’s happened
