generally, revealing ignorance is seen as weakness to be mocked / punished, while bluffing is seen as confidence to be admired / rewarded, the consequences of which are worsened in our hypercompetitive and atomized society. apathy / learned helplessness is a predictable response to this

Not sure what that is either, but most obvious counter example would be Moral Majority, where conservatives made electoral gains by appealing to a group that previously refused to participate in politics, and whose concerns have dominated since, but I *am* sure that doesn't count for reasons.

maybe people don't want to elect a "flawed, complicated, and sometimes contradictory human being whose political views don't always fit neatly into a box" to be Senator. they find it concerning that they might think they're electing a progressive only to get a fetterman or sinema

also, how does Platner claim that he had no idea what a Totenkopf was or that his tattoo was one until a week ago when this Reddit conversation he was part of 6 years ago was all about a soldier with a Totenkopf where people discuss the difference between an SS Totenkopf vs. a Punisher skull etc.

if it makes you feel better - it helped ground me - every single law I looked up banning nazi symbols, if they mentioned individual symbols, would explicitly mention the SS totenkopf. It's not obscure or crypto. Heck, look at the top of this wikipedia page
