If that's the question, I agree.

I take the OP's point that maybe I shouldn't be responsible for professional development vs subject matter of the class, but I think that kind of professional/ethical development is at the center of the value proposition of the humanities. A romantic thought at this point, but I still think it.

I agree that's overkill. I give my speech students a flex zone on their outlines--meet the deadline, you get my feedback on time for your speech. Don't, and you're not penalized, but no feedback. It's about learning not to create unnecessary extra work for others

I was once closer to this opinion than I am now. During the pandemic, the lack of timeliness expectations in because of flex policies was a lack of structure for a good chunk of them. Not trying to be a cop, but I've come to think it's good for many of them educationally

When I do this, you can see it in their eyes. They aren't sure if they're allowed to think this way, but they want to desperately. Just keep repeating it.

I am in no way absolved of this myself, but I do think it's an underdeveloped professional skill that most academics could genuinely improve if they wanted

Someone should get a celebrity to post, like, "Elon Musk is humorless because he doesn't collect bottle caps" and just see what happens
