The greatest political scandal today is not what Trump is doing. It is the fact that congressional Republicans have given up their role in the constitutional system as a check on the executive branch. If we are in a constitutional crisis, it is as much on Mike Johnson and John Thune as anyone else.

things are very bad right now, but the US also has advantages that other backsliding democracies haven't. the best example of this imo is our bafflingly decentralized elections system: there is literally no way for the federal govt to "cancel" a midterm election, bc the feds don't run elections

This morning I was talking with my husband about the unsettled feeling I'm dealing with, and he mentioned that a lot of people are leaning into Mr. Rogers' principle of "look for the helpers." Then he said something that resonated so hard with me. He said, "But what they don't say, and they should, is that's for children.
