Yeah, it's like an assumption that I couldn't possibly be qualified for my work, and that does bother me!

This isn't too be cynical. In fact, the games industry could benefit greatly from young designers. I just urge those designers to understand "why." Taking the time to answer that question will open up more creative opportunities.

And if you want a degree just to have a degree, I promise you game design might be your worst option. If you aren't going to be interested in your work, I seriously urge you to pursue a more stable industry.
