A lovely little horse figurine sculpted from mammoth tusk around 15,000 years ago!

Known as ‘The Little Horse of Lourdes’ it was found in 1886 in the cave of Les Espélugues, Lourdes, Haute-Pyrénées, France. 📷 by me.

My photo shows a small horse statuette in a museum display case. The horse, viewed in profile, was masterfully carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. The sculptor has depicted many realistic details such as the eyes, nostrils, and ears flattened against the head. The coat is represented by finely incised lines and dots. The mane is sculpted in relief, with incised lines on both sides. The four legs and tail are incomplete. The surface of the ivory has a shiny brown patina. Dimensions: Length 7.3 cm x Height 3.5 cm. The statuette is known as ‘The Little Horse of Lourdes’. It was discovered in 1886 in a rock fissure in the Espélugues cave, Lourdes, Haute-Pyrénées, France. Part of the collections at the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Stunning 2,000 year-old #Roman purple glass bottle, probably used for perfume.

The museum image shows a rich purple Roman glass bottle. Free-blown with a spherical body, a flat base, and a narrow, slightly tapering cylindrical neck with flaring rim. 13.7 cm in height. The glass appears to have patchy accretions which have built up over time. The display lighting makes the centre of the bottle glow with a reddish light, as if it contains warm embers. Circa 1st century AD.

A lovely Roman gold necklace with single emerald pendant and a rosette-shaped clasp set with a central garnet stud, 2nd/3rd century AD.

A short gold ‘choker’ style necklace made of a woven wire chain adorned with a single green emerald pendant which hangs down from a loop of gold. The necklace has a large hook-and-eye fastening at the rear which is flanked by a gold rosette with a central garnet stud. The necklace is designed to be worn as a choker with the rosette sitting on the nape of the neck and hair worn up. Dimensions: L. 35.6 cm (14 in.) with clasp. Pendant height 3.1 cm (1 1/4 in.) Similar gold necklaces with single green stone pendants are depicted on two Romano-Egyptian mummy portraits.

A little bear figurine carved out of amber some 6,000 years ago 🐻 ❤️

A hole runs through the bear’s torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord and perhaps worn as a protective amulet.
