Took a quick day trip this weekend from Wells to Portland on the Amtrak Downeaster and got to see the Wells Area Improvement Project construction progress at the WRTC, plus some '01 inaugural train trip nostalgia

Took a golden hour walk around the Old Port while in Portland this week. It was cool and windy but well worth it

Fitchburg Cutoff Bikepath last weekend. This area in Cambridge, near Alewife Station, is one of New England's best hubs for regional shared use path connections + transit

Rode the Seabrook-Salisbury Connector today, part of the East Coast Greenway. Connects to the Marsh and Ghost Trails on its south end. One day it will connect to the NH Seacoast Greenway continuing north.

I like this article because, besides just reporting on the extreme flooding and its impacts, it conveys the importance of green infrastructure in absorbing flood water and increasing resilience.

3rd Ave Burlington (MA). Not bad for a redevelopment of an old suburban office park. Wegman's, restaurants, retail, lodging, apartments, bus stops, walkable streets, civic spaces, public art...

Moody St. in Waltham, MA, earlier this beautiful evening. Lots of people using the many parklets

The Texas flooding news is heartbreaking. Two paragraphs at the end of this CNN article about Camp Mystic are jarring. www.cnn.com/2025/07/08/u...

Tosa Village. It was nice 30-40 years ago when I was growing up, and it's only gotten better since then

Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, WI, with lots of bike parking and a solar sunflower

Interesting '30s & '40s traffic safety ads at the Harley-Davidson Museum. Though H-D, being a seller of police motorcycles presenting motorcycle police as the panacea for reckless driving, was not a neutral observer, it's still fascinating to see how bold their messaging was.

Commercial Alley in Portsmouth, NH: great mix of design, coziness, and uses. A popular bakery, its slightly serpentine path, art, landscaping, and all the people give it visual interest and make it inviting from each intersecting street

Scenes from downtown Ellsworth, ME, yesterday, on a cool, drizzly, early morning, including the Franklin St. parklet with City Hall in the background

A side view of the same building. So visually more like 2 stepbacks with the extended shopfront with roomy decks above. The building is a boutique hotel including ground floor coffee shop and barber shop

Main Street in Kennebunk is one of my favorite Seacoast streets in terms of scale, building envelope, and mix of uses. The stepback on this bldg allows some 4th fl space while fitting nicely within the streetscape and giving the front facade visual interest
