I admit my expertise with Android Kikaider begins and ends with Keita Amemiya’s Mechanical Violator Hakaider, but sometimes you just gotta watch a half-hour movie of 70s Ishinomori toku without context and without a clue just to feel something.

Really feels like Ishinomori playing with the legacy of Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds as much as any of the superheroics of Cyborg 009 and Kamen Rider. Just absolutely delicious TV toku effects work, stylish stuff as much as it’s all a little (wonderfully) baffling.

Really feels like Ishinomori playing with the legacy of Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds as much as any of the superheroics of Cyborg 009 and Kamen Rider. Just absolutely delicious TV toku effects work, stylish stuff as much as it’s all a little (wonderfully) baffling.
Took a curious peak at Himitsu Sentai Gorenger: The Bomb Hurricane (1976), the first ever Sentai movie. Haven’t the foggiest what’s going on, it being a special episode in the middle of an 84 episode season, but the miniatures, models, and vehicles are just SUBLIME. Pure eye candy and toy sorcery.

Took a curious peak at Himitsu Sentai Gorenger: The Bomb Hurricane (1976), the first ever Sentai movie. Haven’t the foggiest what’s going on, it being a special episode in the middle of an 84 episode season, but the miniatures, models, and vehicles are just SUBLIME. Pure eye candy and toy sorcery.
Ryuta Tasaki and Isao Kaneko played Shinji Higuchi’s game of angles and scale SO well. The set work and shooting of the special effects sequences in Gamera the Brave is all really phenomenal stuff, every inch of Nagoya wonderfully realized, lived in, and devastated.

Gamera the Brave’s opening is SO fucking classy. Nearly risks overshadowing the rest of the movie with this style and atmosphere, cheekily bidding farewell to the Kaneko trilogy before locking into a purely mid-aughts reinvention of Showa boys’ adventure. LOVE the gore.

It’s so fucking cool that Biollante is a ghost. Like, that’s a ghost. Phantom in the machine except the machine is an immortal homunculus of Godzilla DNA that would’ve grown out of control regardless of whether or not it was being driven by a ghost.
