Unrepentantly disgusting and so contagiously LOVED, so much humor and humanity and character jammed packed into every fluid jitter and snapshot wriggle. Stellar creature and production design, skin-crawling and delightful, and the camera is SO astonishingly alive!

The last string of episodes are just so, so good. Kunzite’s agonized wail to join his lover Zoisite in purgatory, the Sailor Guardians brutally and bravely falling one by one, Usagi and Serenity merging to light the Earth’s night sky in stunning color.

It’s not the series (much less the genre) at its best or brightest, but it IS probably it at its most iconic. Pure playground storytelling, the logic of a fantastic game of tag, and the imagery of Shocker kaijin exploding like a SpongeBob gag against a snowy Fuji is terrifically funny.

A remarkably soft-spoken story of identity, femininity and sacrifice in the very harem of Edo castle, and gentle intimacy in the quiet moments of life’s grueling grind is told with a visual sensibility unlike anything else. The thing is nothing short of miraculous, a feverish visual masterwork.

The new Medicine Seller (“Kon”) is something of an adrenaline junkie, unable to stop his fanged grins and triumphant exclamations at the thrill of the hunt. Very different from the show’s (“Ri”) jaded and chillier shithead, and animated with some of the most fluid body language I’ve ever seen.
