An utterly clarion argument from ace historian that we are in authoritarianism. Not “on the road to,” “flirting with,” “creatively expanding federal power,” or other euphemisms that will continue to be proffered. Only question is how long will we stay there? Will depend on how we act and respond…
The precise moment when and where in recent weeks America crossed that invisible line from democracy into authoritarianism can and will be debated by future historians, but it’s clear that the line itself has been crossed. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/america-ti...

My mom and stepdad are from the same diaspora group as Zohran Mamdani’s dad (same like “my stepdad was kicked out of the same town and knows some of his classmates”) and apparently the New York Times doesn’t understand how diaspora works, so I am going to tell you a little about my mom’s people!

The "Is it a constitutional crisis yet?!" discussion is so absurd: Of course you can construct increasingly esoteric definitions for why this current moment doesn't meet your exact criteria yet. But meanwhile, this is where we are: Masked agents of the states abducting people for writing op-eds.
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

We can’t look away from this, y’all. If you’re not aware of how awful this particular prison is, here’s a quick read.

Interviewed in the article: a lawyer for a gay man who fled homophobic violence in Venezuela just to be sent to one of worst places on the planet.

The most depraved and dangerous criminal is owed a hearing before he is punished, and we are all at risk if he doesn't get it.

The whole point is we don’t know if they are ‘foreign alien terrorists’! That’s the whole point of due process, and evidence, and a courtroom. We don’t take the government’s say so, especially a government with a history of relentless mendacity.

UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is.
They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there.
They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

Yes. If DHS can barge in, say your visa was revoked, be told you have a green card, say it's revoked too, and then disappear you so that neither your lawyer nor your family can find you, then all the guardrails are gone. There is no policy, practice, or law protecting anyone.
re the previous repost: if they can disappear permanent residents they can disappear citizens
