Agreed, but at the same time — we need to think of news organizations as businesses.

Being at least mildly profitable means they can chart their own destiny.

They need to produce reporting people will pay for, and make the case to their audience.

Just being important isn’t bringing in $$$.

This is what we tried to do originally with @forth.news, building out a news feed for news where everyone is a vetted journalist, and eventually get to a paid tier with rev share.

It’s a really tough cold start problem.

Not to mention, this is how stories go uncovered. If everyone is self assigning and going after the big story of the day, the less shiny stories go unreported.

The issue I see is that if given a choice, people do not necessarily choose the source that holds itself accountable and verifies reporting. We’ve seen this before.

And the problem with limiting information is: who is the authority to determine what is acceptable?
