Sally Hemmings brother James’ story is pretty sad too. He worked in the kitchen, and Jefferson sent him to France to study to become a chef. However Jefferson kept James enslaved and would not grant him freedom until he trained his replacement. He did gain freedom, but eventually died by suicide. 😔

My dad was the first in his family to finish high school, let alone go to college. Working class Irish, it was expected you’d go to work to support the family at 14 unless you were some kind of prodigy.
