Here is the official notice from Aemet about Borrasca Emilia. Stay away from the coast if you value your life ... and I don't care how hyperbolic that sounds after 8 deaths in the sea here in the last few weeks alone.
December 11, 2025 at 2:31 PM
It's a borrasca that will cause these wild seas, coming into the area between the mainland and the Canaries tomorrow. It's a significant storm that Aemet has named Emillia.

Unprepared people, and fools, die in these conditions. Don't be either.

Health in Spain is a devolved regional power, and three regions - Aragón, Murcia and Cataluña - now require masks to be worn in health centres, care homes, and hospitals because of a national flu surge. Other regions may well follow shortly as flu rages.

Wild wild seas this weekend. Orange alert everywhere. Conditions that have killed repeatedly. Avoid the sea in the Canaries, and the coast really, over the next few days if you don't want to be swept away, that is. With an alert in place, the regional Government charges for rescue or body recovery.

Only 5 days left but the annual Guía de Isora social services campaign is well underway to give presents to local children who might otherwise be without anything. Just contact the council and you'll get a letter from a child asking for a dream ...

Well done, Iceland 💙

BREAKING: Iceland will not take part in Eurovision 2026 - RÚV.is
RÚV will not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest in the spring. This became clear after a meeting of the board of RÚV today. It has not been decided whether Söngvakeppnin will be held next year.

8 dead in a month because people go in the water when they shouldn't, most when alerts are in place. See these links and the alert image for the next few days if you want to survive the sea here. If not, fine, they charge for body recoveries.

A problem "of" France, perhaps, but a problem "for" the whole of Europe, and wider afield.

Today's fascinating read. Do have a look! 👇

I've increasingly been finding even pretty basic google searches returning information that is simply wrong, and evidently it is because it also sifts and includes AI content, and that's just a site scraper without discernment and so full of errors. What a shitshow!
The press release says Google Cloud's Gemini for Government will be the first instance available on the internal platform.

As we’ve covered, because Google search results are also consuming AI content that contains errors, it’s become nearly unusable for regular consumers and researchers alike.

Tell you one thing, it might be nuts for kids with sensory issues to wear noise cancelling headphones in school but it's not as nuts as forcing a child to tolerate noise it can't bear, and then punishing it for its overwhelmed reaction, likely to be somewhat wild ...

That's what's "insane".

It's universal and universally appalling. Even a neighbour of ours in the middle of nowhere is now 3 years waiting for a stmp on a licence already officially approved but the funcionario responsible is off sick, and has been for 18 months, and god forbid anyone else can stamp it. Dire bureaucracy.👇

My immediate reaction even before reading Phil's comment in full. It's all about maximising the advertising dosh. Crappissimo commercialism.
The telling phrase is :-
"It's a player welfare measure. It also has sporting & commercial implications."

Translation:-
We put this forward as player welfare, but really its because the sponsors and advertisers need their ad breaks, and we can't say no because we are weak and in their pockets.
News: Every 2026 World Cup match will feature two "hydration breaks," no matter the weather.

Each half will pause for exactly three minutes midway through.

It's a player welfare measure. It also has sporting & commercial implications.

Given the climate, there can't be a "next" renaissance. We boomers, especially in the west, have lived the best of times in human history - analgesia, anaesthesia, personal autonomy, sexual liberty, relative wealth. And here to see its end, window seat at the restaurant at the end of the universe.
The roll back started 1979, but now it's evident. The anti vax movement and religious drive against science in general have pushed the course back to the dark ages. To us and the next generation it won't matter whether the next renaissance is in 200 or 300 years.

They need to learn Latin, they're in Italy after all. Residere, Latin for remain, a word that has more than one relevant meaning to Brits in the EU concerned with their residency ...
Again with the "part year residents" cosplaying. There's one of them on a Brits living in Italy FB page I am a member of. They have seriously FA and are about to FO and are asking for solutions. The first comment of all actual residents is "part-year" doesn't exist. They are only fooling themselves.

To the battlements of Fortress Europe!

Never expected to be where the USA joins the fascistic "post-Enlightenment promoters of injustice, destructiveness, and war".

Like most people ecause of the climate, though they don't see it, Europe too must prep now for a post-friendly-America world.
Europeans understand that the USA have changed side. The US are now on the anti democratic NeW Axis of post-Enlightenment promoters of injustice, destructivness, and war. The Festung Europa has to man her crenellations.

For whatever good it might do, please read the thread in this link before going into the sea in the Canary Islands, or ideally before even going near the coast.

How many times do we have to say it?

Appalling news of four deaths today after people were swept from a rockpool near Los Gigantes. There were wild waves. There was an alert. What more can we do to save people from themselves?

A tragic accident that did not need to happen. One wave. Four dead.

What indeed! Not a lot.

... and what does it say about the nation itself that it values any human by an economic measure?
If immigrants to the UK are absolutely required to clearly be exceptional net producers of wealth, what does it say about the native population's ability to meet that same standard when a country can't support taking chances on human beings having value beyond their payslip?

Wonder if there's some advantage after all in an established church to contain evangelical insanity within a formal framework led by an unelected figurehead, the less showy and more boring the better.

Have always been for disestablishment. Now, not so sure ...

There's a quality to the light at times - like now - which makes your eyes close the minute you're outside. It's sparkling, like cyanide (literally)!

They call it "claridad", and OH's reply when I said that English "brightness" just does not cover it, was "there's a reason for that" ...

The great American dream of individual freedom ... you can't do it TO ME. To hell with everyone else, just not "me".

As a teenager I loved the idea of America. Talk about a turnaround to hating the reality.
People in comments write "this is not America". So what is it, Belgium?

This is the US. This is the "mass deportation" policy in action. It's enacted by president elected on that mandate by Americans. He is still supported by one of the two major parties. It's what they voted for. They knew him.

The moment you think Sepp Blatter really wasn't so bloody ghastly and had at least some idea he should pretend he had some dignity, that's the moment you see it for what it is, little boys playing games, just like Lord of the Flies. But the UK doesn't have much of a navy now to save us all ...

Given tat at every turn, especially at Christmas markets, I have to say that if you have the chance to go to the Feria de Artesanía in the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, go!

Superb craftsmanship from recognized crafters, no tat, ceramics to leather to wood to clothing. Just fabulous.

Can we recognize - and aver - that the United States of America is now an adversary at best, an enemy at worst, of Europe, and certainly not, and nowhere remotely near, an "ally"? Now? Please?
The Trump National Security Strategy is bonkers in many ways but this objective stood out:

"Cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations"

Making their strategy of supporting radical right and extremist parties explicit.
