"I'm chasing good on this planet."

That was what Dr. Jane once told George Stroumboulopoulos, when the two spoke about how busy she was. He shared the memory two weeks ago, when many of us came together in Toronto to honour the iconic figure.

Dr. Jane always had hope – and one of her greatest reasons for hope was young people.

She saw that they were more connected, informed, and equipped than past generations. And she knew that they are not the leaders of tomorrow, but that they are already leading the way and shaping the world today.

Imagine: "When I was dreaming of going to Africa, I didn't know how I'd get there – but I also thought, well, there could be Canada."

Many know Dr. Jane for her observations of chimpanzees but, had she made one different decision, she may have been studying wolves or wolverines in Canada instead.

Dr. Jane touched many people, but nobody knew her better than her own family.

Last week, we heard from her one of her grandsons about what she meant to those who knew her best.

"I will remember her for reminding me of the wonders of this life," Merlin van Lawick said.

Dr. Jane started every lecture with this powerful message: Each of us has the power to create a better future.

We can honour her legacy by "doing our bit" – protecting wildlife, supporting community-led conservation, empowering young leaders, and sharing her message to inspire others.

When Dr. Jane would speak about death, she spoke with the same curiosity and courage that defined her work.

To Dr. Jane, dying was not an end – but her "next great adventure," or another step forward in her long journey of discovery.

Have you seen "Jane?" Inspired by Dr. Jane and her work, this show ran for the past three years – inspiring children and families across the country and around the world.

The show has received critical acclaim and won numerous accolades, too.

When she set out for Gombe, Jane took only her notebook and her binoculars.

She never could have known what she would see out there – but, with time, she would transform the scientific world.

She also transformed our understanding of our relationship to chimpanzees.

Dr. Jane spent years spreading her hopeful message, inspiring millions to act with real courage and bravery.

She did this because she knew – from her time in the wild – what the consequences of inaction were. Take a look.

Kabi was only two years old when he was found by park rangers and brought to Tchimpounga.

Safe from poachers, Kabi was weak when he showed up and needed immediate treatment for parasites. The team at Tchimpounga made sure he got the care he needed, and he was able to recover.

When we come together, we can make an incredible difference.

"It may seem a small thing to pick up pieces of litter every day," Dr. Jane said. "But if there are a million people picking up pieces of litter [...] think of the amount of litter that will be picked up!"

"She focused on what could be done. She reminded us that change begins with compassion and that our humanity is our greatest tool."

At the United States memorial for Dr. Jane this past week, Leonardo DiCaprio spoke words that perfectly captured who Dr. Jane was and what she stood for.

"That's the message: There's always hope – if we get together and take action."

Dr. Jane knew that young people across the country and around the world could "make the world – again – a better place. The way it was. The way it can be. And the way it will be."

"I was nearly sent away from Cambridge!"

She had one more year to go, and yet Dr. Jane was almost sent away from school. But why?

The book she wrote for the National Geographic had just come out – and that had not gone over well.
