And we are not "centering whiteness" by honoring folks like John Brown or Viola Liuzzo. They counted the cost and laid down their lives for the struggle just like one of my great-grandfathers did.

This is why we need A People's History of Humanity (Zinn) instead of the propaganda and lies.

I have always told my white students that they can acknowledge the harm that white supremacy has done, and choose to repair that harm, but I've advised them not to stay there.

You do have some fierce AF ancestors, too. It's just that we don't learn about them or what we learn is lies *on purpose.*

Even in the depths of colonialism, genocide, enslavement, ethnic cleansing & holocaust, there have been white folks all over who have refused and resisted white supremacy.

We get to choose which ancestors we honor. One of my ancestors was an enslaver who sold my foremother. *I don't claim his ass.*

Respectfully, I am going to whisper to some of our white comrades a truth that should be more widely known: You definitely have some ancestors to be proud of, ancestors who refused white supremacy, and poured out their lives in many of these struggles over time.

Time to claim your true history.

A few days ago, Fox News was whining about ICE agents getting heckled at a Mexican restaurant in Minneapolis.

Meanwhile, in the town of Willmar, ICE agents had lunch at a Mexican restaurant, waited until it closed, then confronted and arrested three workers as they left.

the way to tell whether a person is credible is by *listening to what they say* and checking it against verifiable facts. The idea that you can bypass this with some value-neutral procedure is asinine if you think about it for two seconds and also the guiding ideology of 99% of American elites.

likewise, most of the autocratic countries have an opposition that does genuinely believe in democracy (how effective or committed they are is a different story) and we should be supporting them wherever we can

Every country (yes, including yours) has dipshit right wing authoritarians in it who only value liberal democracy as a means for acquiring power and allowing them to exist when defeated and treating them as a fifth column is absolutely necessary

What we’re doing is working. A few people - mostly angry young men who barely have ideological views, just a yearning to commit justified violence - seem almost upset that it’s working, because they wanted the chance to kill someone. The other 99.5% of us want to help our neighbors.

We have many fewer guns than them. We have 100 times as many people as them. Even from a purely strategic perspective, it’s insane to pursue any means of resistance but one that negates their superior military force and advantages the side with the greater number of eyes and ears.

ICE seems to get completely flummoxed when they’re being yelled at by white men over 35. They kind of put their heads down and shuffle their feet. It’s like their kryptonite.

People who were actually enslaved believed that chattel slavery would end one day.

I'm sorry but to me that suggests that you [who are not enslaved in 2026] can also imagine an end to the current horrors.

“ICE Watch works because it surrounds men seeking approval with people loudly expressing their disapproval.”

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.
