There are 3 ways we can improve provision at Key Stage 3.

First, stop treating KS3 as a warm-up for 'serious' work at KS4.

When we do that, we lower the intellectual bar, often without realising it.

It's the national year of reading in the uk in 2026. Instead of asking "why don't kids read any more", ask "how can I help them find the stories (and non fic) they will fall in love with". Less "get off my lawn whippersnappers" and more "come, sit on the lawn, here's a comic".

Since I started teaching 20 years ago, holidays are characterised by teaching anxiety dreams: bad behavior, clashes with leaders etc. Last night, I arrived for a lesson I hadn't planned #angst As soon as I woke up, I wrote down my 'winging-it' ideas from the dream and I'll be using them next week!

Taylor Swift's 'Fate of Ophelia' is a big earworm for me at the moment; but always, always there's a faint echo of the compellingly dreadful 'Desdemona' by the kids of Fame.

Translation ep reminds me of watching Welcome to Sarajevo (media+conflict unit). This yr, my Serbian student told me what many characters were saying. The deliberate lack of translation works brilliantly because it reflects the British journalist's confusion and incomprehension but finally I know :)
Listening to the new episode of Screenshot on translation with @ellenejones.bsky.social & @kermodemovie.bsky.social. Reminded me of visiting a video rental shop in mid ‘90s, choosing a French movie, & being advised (in a whisper) by the employee that “it has subtitles”

Agree wholeheartedly with these criticisms of the new primary writing framework. Hopefully in application it will be more appreciative of self-regulation, context and an emphasis on the joys - and struggles - of composition.
"There is a sense of cherry picking - of choosing research that already supports the way they want to present the framework"

Primary writing expert prof Debra Myhill tells @tesmagazine.bsky.social why the DfE primary writing framework is 'problematic'

After Andor, I'm rewatching the OG Star Wars. I guess it's a testament to my generation that a) I can recite the dialogue after all these years and b) I intuitively know where all the ad breaks fell (from when ITV showed it at Xmas in the early 80s: a VHS tape worn to a thread with repeated viewing)

Brilliant think piece for teachers +leaders from my fellow PGCE alum @samgibbs.bsky.social - about how and why we practise: 'Ensuring a good teacher in every classroom is the best lever we have to give all children lives of choice and opportunity.' I can think of no better bottom-line than that.

Macbeth was a small surprise but the teaching juggernaut of An Inspector Calls rumbles on. The main reasons are covered but one: accessibility and speed. Inspector Calls is more friendly to less literate students and time pressured classes; as is, say, Jekyll & Hyde over Pride & Prejudice.
