I’ll always remember going to see Schindler’s List with some friends when it came out in 1993. When we left, I asked what everyone thought of it and one mate’s only comment was, “It should’ve been in colour.”

I agree. I get that it’s upsetting and many people seek only escapism in movies, but sticking your head in the sand doesn’t achieve anything

My teenage goddaughter went to the cinema with her dad to watch The Shining. She was so appalled that the n-word was used that she refused to watch the rest of the film. Context had no bearing

I’d say this has been the case with a lot of people for years (though more so now). I started getting seriously into cinema as a teen, in the early 90s, and most people I spoke to just could not comprehend how I could view black-and-white films. Or, indeed, subtitled films
