This was the favourite film of my best friend Gary, who died two years ago, aged 50. We watched it around his house many times in our early 20s, and I rewatched it after his funeral, in honour. But aside from its personal meaning to me, it’s a great fucking film
RIP Lee Tamahori
I taught the viscerally upsetting but gripping Once Were Warriors for many years as it was on the exam syllabus.
A heartbreaking film about a Maori family dealing with domestic abuse, alcoholism & racism. It’s on ITVX & Prime.

Anemone is out today. Establishes Ronan Day-Lewis as a director to watch, while his dad makes a monumental return to the screen (those monologues!). A stripped-down drama of knotted anger and calcified pain, yet alive with raw beauty. One of my favourites of the year

Finally got to Apple doc Mr. Scorsese. Some truly great stuff in it, esp pertaining to his childhood and early work. I could listen to Scorsese discuss cinema all day, all week, all month, all year. Needed another couple of eps - squeezing his 21st-century output into one ep was ill-advised

Always loved Friedkin’s Sorcerer, an eye-saucering, mind-boggling remake of Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear (or, if you prefer, as Friedkin did, a fresh adaptation of Georges Arnaud’s novel). This 4k Criterion Edition does full justice to its otherworldly images

THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE (1974) returns to the PCC from a lovely 35mm print - screening Friday 10th October and Thursday 23rd October.
Tobe Hooper’s raw, nerve-shredding vision is still one of the greatest horror films ever made.

Jim Hosking’s new film, Ebony and Ivory, is every bit as silly and surreal as you’d want from the director of The Greasy Strangler. So much fun. I’m looking forward to hosting a Q&A with the writer-director tonight. Please come along if you’re free!

This beauty has just arrived. @SecondSightFilm doing a typically stunning job. All three films in the Pusher trilogy will leave you bruised and blistered. Must-see cinema. I loved writing about them. Available from Sept 15

'It's still so relevant': The power of Stephen King's first - and most disturbing - novel The Long Walk
The Long Walk imagines young men competing in a deadly marathon for entertainment. A new film version is a reminder of how it anticipated our reality TV age.

I’ve been waiting 37 years for a film of The Long Walk, ever since I read Stephen King’s novel as a teenager and it rocked my world. Francis Lawrence’s adaptation was worth the wait. My review for @empiremagazine.bsky.social

The Long Walk review: Gruelling Stephen King adaptation doesn't dilute or sanitise its story
Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, and Mark Hamill star in Francis Lawrence's Stephen King adaptation, depicting a deadly dystopian walk. Read the Empire review.

Look at this terrifying tome from @clarkcollis.bsky.social! I’ve followed Clark’s writing for years in Entertainment Weekly and before that had him as an editor on the much-lamented Neon magazine and if anyone can get to the gnarly heart of the modern horror it’s him.

When people learn I’m a film journalist, the most common Q is, “What’s your favourite film?” I always ask it in return. Today, someone replied “Salvatore Giuliano”. What a great selection. Not talked about nearly enough. One of Scorsese’s favourites

Saw Naked Gun today. Not as uproariously funny as I hoped but the gag rate is high and I did chuckle from start to finish. Glad to have such outrageously silly, deadpan humour back in a film, and back in the cinema

August is of course a perfect time to go away - summer, school holidays - but must the entire film industry bugger off in the same week? Seems that everyone I email at mo is OOO
