Did you ever wonder how all those markings on a college football field came to be? Here's an article I published last year that covers 145 years, so it's not a quick read, but there's a table at the end that summarizes all the changes. open.substack.com/pub/jameslee...

Amazingly, UNC has only gone 0-3 against the other Big 4 teams 3 times. Obviously, 1988 and 1989. Can you name the other year?

@murphsturph.bsky.social Graves' family is inextricably linked to the history of the University. One of his brothers was also the long time editor of the Chapel Hill Weekly. His mother ran a boarding house on the site of the Carolina Inn after his professor father passed away. See ncpedia.com.

@murphsturph.bsky.social Re your logo article, the stair step UNC that the current staff is promoting is not the stair step logo used under Dick Crum. Those letters used the Volta Bold typeface. The University of Northern Colorado football team wore the logo from 1980~2000, and won 2 DII 🏆.

Public records from one school's head coaching search committee accidentally revealed how they're planning to circumvent public records laws during their coaching search

You can probably guess the school from the art, but read it now in this week's FOIAball!

Old heads might remember that the University seal was the de facto logo used on business cards and the like before the Well. The new Old Well logo unified the hundreds of versions used by campus groups. I'm sad to see it go. dailytarheel.com/article/univ...
Farewell to the Well: UNC adopts interlocking NC as University-wide logo
Individuals who don't have ties to the University aren't able to easily recognize the Old Well logo, Adrienne King, UNC’s associate vice chancellor for marketing, said. The Old Well logo is only 22 ye...

UNC has played all the other Big Four teams in the same season 89 times. They've been just as likely to go 1-2 as 3-0. The most frequent outcome is 2 wins and 1 loss. Carolina has been winless in 5 of those 89 seasons. An 0-3 record this year would be the 4th occurrence. #GoHeels #BigFour

MLB should be looking at umpires.
This is not some kind of bullet dodged. MLB cannot say with any confidence that this behavior didn't change game outcomes

Looks like this list starts with players in the 1920's. I'd add:
Ernest "Pot" Graves (Line) UNC 1897-1900, Army (1905-1921) (Coached Eisenhower at West Point);
Gordon Johnston (Coach) UNC 1896, Army (1898-1934) (Medal of Honor recipient, interred at Arlington National Cemetery) #VeteransDay

@ncrabbithole.com Not to brag, but I didn't see Oppenheimer (2023) because I had seen Oppenheimer (1980), the PBS miniseries with Sam Waterston as JRO. Did the film mention that Tony Goldwyn's character was the Consolidated University (UNC System) President?

In the film Oppenheimer, was it ever mentioned what Tony Goldwyn's character's day job was?

@rl-bynum.bsky.social If you're at the military veterans thing at Kenan tomorrow, can I ask if you'll check for a couple of names. Ernest "Pot" Graves played at UNC then at West Point. Coached at WP. Gordon Johnston played at Princeton; coached at UNC in 1896. MoH recipient, interred at Arlington.

I've missed this if anybody's looked ahead at UNC's last three football games of the season. I thought playing the other Big Four teams in a row was pretty rare. Turns out I was right. It's only happened twice before, in 1933 and 1999. Both seasons UNC went 2-1 in the matchups. #GoHeels #BigFour
