We systematically detail and critique war crime apologism - efforts to excuse, downplay, or even celebrate battlefield atrocity. Give it a read!

Interesting for both it’s historical account of US conduct in Vietnam and Afghanistan, and for it articulating a US way of war that is uninterested in signalling any adherence or deference to notions of just war.
Trump: "The problem with Vietnam, we, you know, we stopped fighting to win. We would've won easy. We would've won Afghanistan easy. We would've won every war easy. But we got politically correct. 'Oh, let's take it easy.' We're not politically correct anymore, just so you understand."

This begs the question of why we have collectively chosen to make this such a difficult phenomena to explain.

Why choose the mystification and psychologising when such an obvious and intuitive answer is so readily available?

Why are the marketing narratives of new (US) military contractors finding their way into the government speeches? Do they offer to write them? The trope of 'peace through strength' for the UK? A defence dividend? ... All of it seems so detached from the realities of war, possibly even politics.
PM: "We are moving to a war fighting readiness...to deliver peace through strength."

Q. I'm assembling a list of the various terms we use to talk about the social processes through which war is produced.

At the moment I have: militarisation, militarism, martial politics, military social harm, war preparedness, everyday modalities of war.

What am I missing and where can I find it?

Every day I learn something new about the casual brutality of Israel's assault on Palestinians. Today it's that Israel is the first air force to use F-35 fighter jets in "beast mode", allowing it to carry more & heavier bombs. I can just imagine the dudes coming up with the name.

This is entirely reflective of Starmer’s general tendency to avoid positive statements of value or principle.

Instead, he governs according to the rules and rulings that are made elsewhere.

This is not only intellectually impoverished, it is also moral cowardice.

Prime minister says he thinks court’s decision has given a ‘much clearer position for those drawing up guidance’ In an interview with ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary and minister for women and equalities, criticised the behaviour of some of the activists who demonstrated against the supreme court’s trans ruling at the weekend. Some statues were damaged during the protest in London, and some of the placards waved used extreme or inflammatory language. What we have seen in recent days, where it comes to defacing of statues, some pretty terrible placards that have been displayed in protests around the country, it really is just completely unacceptable. We need to move to a situation where we can just treat one another with dignity and respect, that, yes, we maintain single-sex spaces for women, absolutely, the ruling is clear, but trans people too have a right to live their lives free of harassment, free of discrimination. We don’t routinely police toilets and it’s for businesses, including pubs, to decide how they run their premises. But I would hope that that business would make sure that there is a safe and appropriate place for all people to use, including trans people, who do deserve dignity and respect, let’s be clear. I welcome the decision of the supreme court, which has given us clarity, much-needed clarity, and I think for those that are now drawing up guidance, it’s a much clearer position. So I’m really pleased that the court has now clarified the position. I think the supreme court has answered that question. A woman is an adult female, and the court has made that absolutely clear. I actually welcome the judgment because I think it gives real clarity. It allows those that have got to draw up guidance to be really clear about what that guidance should say. Continue reading...
