Whether or not the Bengals are really trying to trade Trey, there's clearly an impasse. All of this was avoidable.

Pay him early? You've saved money and avoided embarrassment.

Trade him for picks before the draft? A lesser evil at least.

Drag it out for maximum drama and embarrassment? The worst.

Endless storylines for TNF tonight! Lou Anarumo vs. former division rival Baltimore, Bengals taking on the Super Bowl Champions, Pete Carroll vs. his former team! How does the NFL do it?

Sure, it's satire, but there are some starters playing too!

We've got the first of a 2-parter with Mike Potts available now!

We start with a lot of talk on Shemar Stewart and how the board game together. Talked about trades as well. Tomorrow we focus on picks 2-6. Really insightful stuff.

Here's the depressing Bengals cap update

tl;dr: inflated y1 cap hits to squeeze 2025 cap space way more than necessary, "preventing" themselves from going after moderate veteran deals that could have helped them push the roster

Can't update #Bengals cap for Chase's contract yet, but here's an update with available info for Tee & Ja'Marr and the cap hit updated for Tee

Lots of cap, enough cash for a few moves within their projected budget. If they extend Trey, tighter for cash unless they're gonna spend more than normal.

Will definitely discuss the cap impact - and cash impact - when we have those numbers! Might be a day or two.
@jakeliscow.bsky.social as soon as you have the cap numbers would you please share them as well here? Thanks
BOOM. The Bengals got it done, like we reported yesterday. Let's discuss Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins' NEW Contracts LIVE⬇️⬇️

Summarizing my Day 1 Bengals FA thoughts if that's it for the night:
- All of the moves make sense individually. They're mostly floor-raisers, not game-changers, but you need those.
- Pass rush concerns persist. What's the plan? Trey has to be back on the table.

I like the BJ Hill move for Cincinnati. Solid player, they needed a floor player there with the young guys they're waiting to develop, and Hill is good at that. Fair deal too!

BJ Hill back to the Bengals for 3-years, $33M per Schefty.

He deserves it and this does not preclude them from getting deals done with Chase & Higgins done but I can only imagine the reaction of Bengals fans when these non-WR extensions get reported.

Sam Hubbard is retiring a Bengal.

An awesome 3rd round pick for this team, a leader, an overachiever for much of his career.

We'll always have the Fumble in the Jungle.

Enjoy retirement, Sam!

The conclusion on this: Back to working with the defense full-time in Cincinnati.
Bengals hiring Sean Desai for Senior Defensive Assistant Role. Same title with the Rams. Jourdan Rodrigue reported Desai's role would be "multi-faceted... with the offensive coaches from a defensive perspective."

Rapoport tweeted a part of his role was running the scout team against the offense.

The Bengals free agency tier list and tracker we work on every year will be out soon.

I'm tracking current cap space and expected cash spend for the Bengals in the sheet as well, including some expenses not accounted for by the usual suspects.

Tee Higgins was never getting to free agency, as Locked On Bengals listeners knew before today.

Now we know they'll use the tag to continue working on a long-term deal if they need to.

Sounds like they communicated well and intention is still clearly long-term.
Sources: The Bengals' plan to use the franchise tag on Tee Higgins. Here's what it means for a long-term deal, when it could happen and other details that we have on the star wide receiver⬇️

The 26-year-old played on the tag last year. This time feels different.

The Free agency class is barren. The draft lacks pop. This NFL offseason will be defined by an unprecedented amount of great trade targets.
