This was back in the 1960s. As a former OB-GYN RN, I’m well aware this is an extremely dangerous practice. It still persists, however. Crazy stuff.

Stupidity. Obviously the mother is the only source nourishment, oxygen, moisture, etc for a growing fetus. The fetus ‘absorbs’ whatever the mother consumes: nutrition, air she breathes, etc.The baby’s development in the womb would not be optimal.
