2 book advances = 2 months of rent and some change.

My 2 later clarkesworld stories in 2024 = 2 months of rent

My 1 feature for The Local TO = 1 month of rent

The rest of my writing in has pretty much amounted to cups of coffee & maybe 3 grocery runs

Since I finished my undergrad in 2019 (which kinda coincided with me becoming more of a “pro” writer) writing has paid 5 months of my rent.

Not grants, not teaching, not side jobs, not the 3 years I spent on Uber Eats—which are all the main ways I’ve lived in the last 6 years

People pretending Iraq and Afghanistan were… do they even know about these wars

I feel like selfpub still hangs on to the term "public domain", and I can't really imagine ppl in fanfic would make a point of differentiating, since fanfic uses IP's all the time! (unless maybe it refers to fanfic authors coining their specific "twists" on the material?)

I think that her asking the question and broadening out from there is kind of sweet. Nobody should be ragging on her.

Separately though, I do think it is sad that we’ve allowed corporate media to train people to think so strictly via copyrights and IP that this is how the question is framed
