The gorge has a layer of exposed rock before obtaining a steep angle towards the river. Distant mountains are light blue in the far distance and there is light filtering through thick cloud cover. A larger spruce pine tree is to the left, marked with the single white line mark indicating the Appalachian Trail. The dirt trail winds in an S curve among various ages of spruce pine trees. A sapling shows strong green foliage at only 1 1/2 feet high. Bright green moss is scattered along the edges of the trail. Moss can also be seen on lower tree trunks.

The Roan Highlands on an overcast autumn day. The picture shows the foreground curve of Round Bald covered in natural long shaggy grasses. Sparse leaves on trees, and Rododendron bushes are in the upper right portion of the picture. But the picture is really about the light, which is coming from the left upper part of the picture and throwing long shadows of tree trunks across the majority of the picture. For being in the forest that much light is a bit unusual. The light brings to life, the normally dark dirt and rocks of the path, making them more of a light tan color than the usual gray.

A wide dirt path through the woods has large rock boulders to the side and occasionally middle of the path. Roden in bushes flank, each side of the trail. Deciduous trees form a canopy above. some yellow and orange leaves provide a nice contrast to the dark green rhododendron leaves. In the far distance, two trees are grown together, such that it looks like a tree person as the trunks look like legs joining in the middle and then breaking back apart to form head and arms. This is so far in the distance it’s really not noticeable to most people.
