During Jim Henson's first show, Sam and Friends, he often pushed the bounds of puppetry. His most infamous pursuit is a muppet called Ophel, built out of animal bone and sinew to create "a better illusion of life".
"It's like he had a mind of his own" said Henson, "We got rid of him after one show."

During this later interview, Henson admitted that Ophel scared everyone in the crew. "I think I went too far. Nobody liked how he moved... He was unpredictable to control, twitchy. And God, he stank."

The single 1960 episode featuring Ophel, except for one frame, has since become lost media.
