Hmm I don’t know what would reduce the nanny state culture: more bureaucrats who think that researchers are always trying to cheat the system, or less. 🤔

It’s so very Australian to beat anyone who dares to apply for grants with the compliance stick. 🙄

There’s no debate about the grants bucket urgently needing to multiply in size. Also yes, they push the compliance workflow back to the institutes which makes turns everything into chaos. But the obsession with compliance is out of this world. So much waste created from it.

One gets treated like one has broken the law merely going through the NHMRC pre-app compliance checks. Imagine NHMRC scrutinising why I need to buy windscreen washer fluid from a car supplies shop after my postdoc insists this is the only detergent suitable for cleaning our culture substrates 🤦🏾‍♀️

Can I politely ask *why* the ARC needs more staff? The whole “compliance” systems around ARC is just insane. I’ve applied &/or reviewed grants in councils in 8 countries & never seen red tape and nitpicking practices like the ARC. Perhaps this signals a culture shift & more money going to funding?

We have a ruling class in Australia who like to spin the anti-intellectual narratives and just watch in glee as research careers crash and burn. None of them wants to hear or believe researchers when we say that this will leave Australia behind in the stone ages of science.

When I took this job as the Head of a department, I never thought my job would involve consoling & moving on some of my most talented researchers at the end of each year - just bc their ARC/NHMRC grant didn’t get up. Having worked in multiple countries, I have never seen this normalised like in Aus.

This is such a joke.

What you are NOT told by the same folks is that you are sabotaging your career by being queer and woman - sometimes of colour. You cannot win.

Isn’t this what you do over there in Britain - elect people like this to be the leader?

And all the “global warming researchers” in the thread defending emissions… 😬

One more thing I would say is that being out in jobs/workplaces like academia are complex. They can be hugely empowering to be out, but it is never a walk in the park. One comes out on one’s own terms, only when ready.

What would have been really useful is a deeper survey like the impacts on feeling included and safe, connection and, impact on career directions (beyond college) through empowerment and feeling inspired.

This is of course reinforcing what we all know from hugely positive effects of LGBTQ+ academic & STEM networks in 🇬🇧 like @lgbtqstem.bsky.social, @prideinstem.bsky.social, @thestemvillage.bsky.social over the past decade. Less well in 🇦🇺 due to lack of an organised & inclusive LGBTQ academic networks.

Also noting that this is from surveys in 2023 in the US before the apocalypse for marginalised people, especially in academia.

It should not be a surprise for anyone the benefits of instructors who can bring their authentic selves to work. Little acknowledgment though of the courage it takes.

Apparently it’s one of the biggest political levers that right wingers can pull on right at the minute, to block healthcare or safety. Token dates are just not good enough any more. Who will protest to push back on this?

Also, imagine being an unsuspecting user downloading those apps and committing root access privileges (and not to mention private + personal data) to something that is just rotten in the middle...

OMG, I'm having enough of some folks whom I could never convince about the value to learn the value of coding during their training days, now bragging about their vibe coding skills. 😪
