One of the real highlights of working in @singmolsci.bsky.social is that the view into the campus comes truly alive in the spring. The downside is that campus outside the window comes truly alive in the spring just as ALL OF THE ARC grant deadlines come around and I cannot go outside 😭

Science outreach, particularly celebrating science from the lens of EDI was a lifeline for me in surviving academia. These days I am convinced inspired by the members of my dept who have a real passion for this. So, it’s just pure joy.

What an excuse! This was seen a dog-loving part of Sydney. Somehow, I doubt the owner is coming back for it.

A fascinating 2023/24 study of publishing timelines over 140,000 academics in STEMM showing discipline & country-specific attrition of academic careers from the publication of first paper. The probability of continuing after 19y just 38-43%. Interactive maps at:

Dear Nature Portfolio,

This is a bit rich coming from you especially just weeks after your editors ghosted me after I raised concerns about the revisions (or lack thereof) of a paper that I reviewed for one of your flagship journals.

IT WILL BE A WHILE BEFORE I SUBMIT MORE OF MY WORK.

Here in 🇦🇺 , we are going to be joining our academic friends doing it tough around the globe. Some big Aus unis looking at mass layoffs to offset the losses from international student caps that our Labour govt is proposing to bring in. Way to desalinate the biggest industry that’s not about mining.
