I saw someone say once that the best fanfic could never be scraped of its source material and turned into a trad publication and I think about that a lot. There is so much that goes into worldbuilding that does not and cannot happen in a fanfic

I have so many opinions about fanfic authors getting book deals simply because they are popular on Ao3, but it basically boils down to capitalism. The publishers don’t care about the art, they care about the money and if reskinned fanfic makes money, then ofc they’re for it
