We should’ve taken the advice we posted last week: read the book, then watch the movie. Some things just don’t translate.

In our years of doing this, The Nerdery Movie Night has never fallen on our anniversary!

We’ve spent at least the last six anniversaries celebrating the same way: a bottle of champagne, exchanging of gifts, passing out candy, & watching a horror movie.

Happy nine years of marriage to us!

October Nerdery Book Club, selected by Dave and discussed over seafood (natch) at Fish N Grill.

Moments of terror are neutered by odd narrative choices, and the story within a story doesn’t even remotely work. We can’t believe this won a Bram Stoker!

I last saw Belly on the King tour - May 12, 1995 (which I’m fairly certain was senior prom night). I saw them again tonight… in the *same* venue (although it was WUST Radio Music Hall then… now it’s the “new” 9:30 Club). They played “King” in its entirety and a set of faves and b-sides. So fun!

Why do I have such a visceral (read: unpleasant) reaction to Rachel Zegler? Anyway. She wasn’t alive for Y2K. Nor was most of the cast. Still…

My grandmother immigrated here from Germany in the 1950s. My favorite city in Europe also happens to be the birthplace of my two dearest German friends. It felt like time to honor all my favorite Germans. And also the city of Berlin - I swear I lived there in a past life.

I’m old enough to remember Liz Phair singing about a “fresh young Jimmy jamming, slamming, ramming in me” followed ten years later by a song about someone’s “hot white cum”. The difference is we don’t know the man who Phair is singing about.

We definitely have a name & face for this redwood tree 🤢

September Nerdery Book Club, selected by me and discussed over tacos from Karla on the Go food truck.

Like the best memoirs, The Outrun is written with a clinical detachment that focuses less on drama and more on a powerful journey. Stunning.

Bow down to a fascist, get canceled.

We encourage you to end your relationship with Hulu/Disney/ABC, too.

Sorry that we will now miss Jeopardy on Hulu. @kenjennings.bsky.social is a national treasure, always and forever.

30 year high school reunion this evening solidified the fact that I am old and can’t hear jack shit in a bar with loud music playing. Had a ten minute conversation with someone and heard roughly 15% of it. Just nodding and enthusiastically agreeing to god knows what.

Dave & I are far from rabid Harry Potter fans, but when Krispy Kreme announced their themed donuts, we were intrigued.

We bought all four today. What follows is our reactions/ratings (out of 5 ⭐️) of each.

August Nerdery Book Club, selected by Dave and discussed over Mexican seafood dishes at Rey Azteca.

The structure of Sing Like Fish is hit or miss, but the melding of pop science writing & academia mostly hits. Plus it’s a super fascinating topic.

With the state of the world as it is these days, this may seem like a peculiar thing to brag about, but… for the first time in my adult life, I successfully used an entire tube of lip balm. Sure, it took me a few years and several other tubes have been bought and lost in that time, but still. Win.
