I think a more revealing question is "what is the thing you are asked to make going to impact" and then compare the answer to the asker's. Architecture should be a side effect of need but...

I almost always choose speed vs quality when implementing a feature/test. However, several times when I could have coded worse and faster I chose quality because I didn't trust leadership not to build on it (and then make me retroactively maintain it)

But I wouldn't expect any *senior* to be able to give meaningful input into a redesign of a substantially large app until after 3 months.

Keep in mind the senior usually knows how to do things so the underlying code is least perturbed rather than really grok it. Also knows what questions to ask!

As a manager, I'd only fire in the first month for lacking basic skills (like debugging) or gross soft skill problems (lack of coachability or judgement). I assume 3 months to competency/productivity for a mid-level, a year for a junior, and about a month for a senior (familiar with the tech stack).

Management does not have time to fire and rehire; someone else would have the same problem. They could still scapegoat you but I wouldn't worry because stress isn't gonna make you learn any faster (probably the opposite).

Generally I can attach some code on with minimal interconnections and debug individual problems without understanding everything
I just can't restructure or make accurate level of effort predictions until I understand the mental model(s) behind the code.

My bet is he causes enough protests on purpose to lock down and control elections generally by reducing polling locations due to "security risks". He doesn't actually have enough manpower to do this yet though! So recruitment is really his primary issue. Backup is likely not certifying "unsecured"
