Legend of Blue Eyes feels like they just took the broad sketch of a card game directly from the Kaiba arc of the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga and printed it mostly unchanged. The game barely has mechanics.

MTG Alpha on the other hand already feels like a pretty well thought out game, with a lot of intentionality to both the gameplay rhythm and how flavor is integrated. It's varied, intricate, and charming, and simple enough at its core to pick up quickly.

It was envisioned as a battle between two mages who had expecting and unpredictable spell books that they compiled through wit and guile, striking deals with other wizards or besting them in combat and taking their secrets for themselves. You were supposed to either trade cards, or wager them.

The basic rules for Alpha have you selecting a random card from you deck to stake on the outcome of the game. You weren't supposed to have optimized decks, you were supposed to have whatever you could get your hands on.
