We bought Article II of the United Nations Charter with the blood of a hundred million human beings, and less than a century later, it's being sold for nothing by people who don't even understand what they're doing.
i think this is what drives me nuts. people talk about how, say, the UN was founded by "starry eyed idealists" who didn't understand "reality." the truth is that the UN was founded by those who had just fought and *won* the bloodiest war in human history.

Will people on the move soon be branded as terrorists? A new decree escalates Italy's war on migration. Yesterday, Meloni's ultra-right government published a proposal, including measures to deny our vessels entry into 🇮🇹territorial waters for 1-6 months.🧵https://t.co/Eot8NjJQHs

Christian nationalist politicians lecturing Jews descended from Holocaust victims about what is actually antisemitic really is the logical endpoint to the current antisemitism discourse.
BONDI: You didn't ask Merrick Garland anything about Epstein

BALINT: Weak sauce

BONDI: And with this antisemitic culture right now, she voted against a resolution--

BALINT: You want to go there! Really? Talking about antisemitism to a woman who lost her grandfather in the Holocaust! *storms off*

most Americans relationship with power is roughly analogous to an alcoholic’s relationship to their drink of choice.

I’ve used this line before but Starmer was a human rights lawyer in the same way Shipman or Mengele were medical doctors. Fascinated I’m sure by the mechanisms at work, chiefly so as to abuse and bend them to his own advantage.
1. People struggle to reconcile Keir Starmer’s ruthless ambition, Machiavellian manoeuvres, breaking of promises, collaboration in genocide, bans on protest, aid cuts, benefit cuts and war on nature with his history as a human rights lawyer. But perhaps there is no contradiction.

love this guy, sort of excited to see A) where he goes from the mayoralty and B) how power will inexorably corrupt and ruin him as it would us all

American shame died for good when Ford pardoned Nixon, though this is prehistory now apparently. Everything before that point was half-hearted impressions of shame, everything after is lurching closer and closer to unipolar imperial insolence.

No people can have so much power and remain sane.
"Since prison for Epstein’s fellow abusers gets unlikelier over time, America’s deeper question is whether it can restore a culture of shame." - marvellous, marvellous column by @edwardluce.bsky.social:
The Epstein rot goes deep
America must now ask itself if it can restore a culture of shame

what better way to recover emotionally from a loss in the manchester derby and losing to a team with a forward slash in the name and an artificial pitch than a huge 5-0 hammering of the hated HSV

incidentally I'm increasingly convinced that "UX" "research" and "design" don't only suffer from similar methodological errors but are proactively using them as mechanisms to reshape society around the whims of venture capitalists. Often unknowingly, sometimes cynically.
if i could make you read ONE (1) single post to improve your understanding of the challenges of social science in general it would be this one from @markfabian.bsky.social about wellbeing science specifically

From that piece by Labour‘s Dr Economist MP - this is such a wildly reductive and bizarre reading of Britains role in the war that I hardly know where to start. Britain stood any chance at all only by virtue of the continued exploitation of foreign colonies.
