Aka Kristin. Walking each path one step at a time and listening along the way. Law, birds, conservation, and loads more.
This point on data surveillance and policing is not made often enough. Our focus should be centered on addressing crime before it begins and less on “Aha! I got you!”
4. It still doesn't address the *root* causes of crime. Surveillance is not a theory of sustainably preventing crime or keeping people safe. Surveillance gets convictions, but do convictions lower crime rates city or state-wide? No! Put that money to things that do: housing, education, health.

This makes me think I should check out map feeds on Bluesky. Meanwhile, here’s a super cool women’s history map of NYC.
This was such a satisfying project, and one in which I realized for the first time how much my whole life had been spent in a manscape, in places where almost everything was named after men.
#WomensHistoryMonth: The City of Women Map is a fascinating visualization of women’s history and urban transportation. Created by Molly Roy, Rebecca Solnit, and Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, the map renames subway stops after notable women with links to that area, offering an entirely new way to view #NYC.

Tips to keep democracy alive in 2025:

1. Be Brave. Avoid helpless/hopeless talk. Authoritarians want you to feel powerless because it makes their work easier. Courage, faith, and optimism are essential. Fascism feeds on cynicism and pessimism. Starve it.

This is so huge and important. Grateful to President Biden for this important decision. Thankful for the advocates who have worked so hard over years for this. (Yes, wish it was 40 of 40, bu this is good. Great, even). apnews.com/article/bide...
Biden gives life in prison to 37 of 40 federal death row inmates before Trump can resume executions
The move spares the lives of people convicted in killings, including the slayings of police and military officers, people on federal land and those involved in deadly bank robberies or drug deals.

The latest FBI data confirm that crime in the U.S. decreased significantly in 2023. The number of murders dropped 13 percent from the previous year.

Pretty much every category of crime decreased in pretty much every part of the country (the exception being car thefts).
