Just finished watching the landmark 1969 TV series Civilisation by Kenneth Clark. Hard to think of a more humanist ethos than this, really
At this point I reveal myself in my true colours, as a stick-in-the-mud. I hold a number of beliefs that have been repudiated by the liveliest intellects of our time. I believe that order is better than chaos, creation better than destruction. I prefer gentleness to violence, forgiveness to vendetta. I believe that in spite of the recent triumphs of science, men haven't changed much in the last two thousand years; and in consequence we must still try to learn from history. History is ourselves.

The perfect daily schedule is simply to copy Princess Margaret in the morning and Ursula Le Guin in the afternoon
Princess Margaret’s morning schedule: 9.00 A.M.: She has breakfast in bed, followed by two hours in bed listening to the radio, reading the newspapers ('which she invariably left scattered over the floor') and chain-smoking. 11.00 A.M.: She gets into a bath run for her by her lady's maid. NOON: An hour in the bath is followed by hair and make-up at her dressing table, then she puts on clean clothes - as one would imagine of a Princess, she never wore any of her clothes more than once without having them cleaned'. 12.30 P.M.: She appears downstairs for a vodka pick-me-up. 1.00 P.M.: She joins the Queen Mother for a four-course lunch 'served in an informal manner from silver dishes', with half a bottle of wine per person plus 'fruit and half a dozen different varieties of native and Continental Ursula Le Guin’s afternoon schedule: I:00-3:00 p.m.—reading, music. 3:00-5:00 p.m.— correspondence, maybe house cleaning. 5:00-8:00 p.m.— make dinner and eat it. After 8:00 p.m.—I tend to be very stupid and we won't talk about this.
