Reader & reviewer of books on the second world war. 📚
Currently reading the fascinating diary of General Ironside published in 1962.
Like Churchill, he kept warning the government about Germany's rearmament, whilst Britain did nothing.
1938, he is now the only General to have served in a war. Here he shares the state of Britain's army.

The practice of price-clipping a gifted book must have equally frustrated many a book loving recipient, just as it does today's collector.

New arrival.
Only £3 currently on Ama#on, so had to treat myself.
Dudley Clarke's story is far more interesting than the small cameo appearances of Dominic West in SAS Rogue Heroes.

Best to keep running up Lawrence, after all the rain. ☔️

I won't get much reading done during the next few weeks, so for today's #histbookchat....
You might not have seen them in the shops, nor reviewed elsewhere online. This quartet from my 2025 reading list all definitely deserve another little mention.

Retired by the RAF far too soon, the story of the Harrier's development & its service around the globe, deserves a worthy book. This is it.

Underwater again for this weeks #histbookchat.
A US diver has written the stories of the wrecks he explores.

Casemate Illustrated takes a look at the craft of both Allied & Axis fleets, as well as the operations in which they were used.

Placed in charge of the weekly grocery shop at Tesco this evening and of course stopped off at the books section.
Very surprised on opening this book to find it signed by the late Mr Forsyth!
No sticker on cover to say so and the rest were also signed.

Been chipping away at this over the past week & was using a day off to push on, but I've given up. Of the 260 pages of narrative, the mission doesn't start until page 140. This followed chapter after chapter of introducing key figures.
Sorry Max, but Damien's is far more thrilling.

Just finished over my early morning coffee.
Roger's research included access to German archives & so provides some much needed balance to the usual Allied perspective.
With many shorter chapters, it allowed for a broader range to be covered.
Highly readable & certainly recommended.

I'm a huge admirer of Hugh's Dunkirk book, but personally I struggle to keep an interest when a book's narrative is constantly interrupted to quote from first hand accounts.
Clearly well written and a huge book for the money, but sadly just not for me.

Four years ago on a beautiful November day. Whilst we stood in Guy Gibson's office at RAF Scampton, a Red Arrow taxied past.

@midgegillies.bsky.social reveals the remarkable stories of the early female pilots risking it all to cross the Atlantic.

As it's that time of year.
I remember reading this series when I was still living at home. Was it that draughty old house, or these stories that made the hairs on my neck stand up? #histbookchat
