He was arrested on 27 December 2024 after Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, destroyed the facility, and detained him at gunpoint.

1. So I have a few thoughts on "heritage Americans," Nathanial Hawthorne, witch-hunting, Thomas Pynchon, Calvinism, strange feuds, the Daughters of the American Revolution, FDR, the moral responsibilities of nationalism & (I guess) Jack Kirby.

4. The relation between Thomas Pynchon and his great-great-great-great Grand Father William is not merely a biological one. William Pynchon was the author of "The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption" - a fierce critique of Calvinism & the first book banned in the Western Hemisphere.

5. William Pynchon got into trouble with is fellow colonist not only as critic of Calvinism but also an opponent of Connecticut's vicious ethnic cleansing of the Indigenous populations. His political unpopularity led him to return to England, although some of his family remained.

6. Thomas Pynchon is very mindful of his family's history. William Pynchon is recast as William Stothrope in Gravity's Rainbow. More broadly, Pynchon's work pervasively grapples with Calvinism, presenting history as a long battle between the supposed elect and the preterite (the supposedly damned)

8. Strangely enough, Pynchon's ancestry also entangles him with another great American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose own primordial American ancestor William Hauthorne had been a judge (a friendly one) in the blasphemy trial William Pynchon in the 1650s.

9. Perhaps to exorcise his own family guilt, Nathaniel Hawthorne portrayed William Pynchon (renamed Colonel Pyncheon) as a vicious witch-hunter in The House of Seven Gables (1851). This provoked an angry letter from Rev. Thomas Pynchon (1823-1904), the namesake & great grand uncle of the novelist.

10. Despite the fact that Nathaniel Hawthorne inexplicably slandered the ancestor of Thomas Pynchon, the two novelists actually have much in common: both are "Heritage Americans" for whom a distinguished ancestry is not a point a pride but a reason to grapple with their nation's dark history.

11. All the genealogical information I've presented is to show just how much a "Heritage American" Pynchon is: his family is woven into the literary and political history of the USA going back nearly 500 years. And this fact deeply inflects his novels as fierce interrogations of national sins.

12 If Pynchon is a nationalist he's a morally responsible one. But there are other "Heritage Americans" who have an uncritical relationship with the past & who use their ancestry as a pretext for xenophobia: the group Daughters of the American Revolution often did that.

13. Franklin Roosevelt once addressed the Daughters of American Revolution and saluted them as "fellow immigrants." As Allan Bloom once explained, this was a cheeky tweak at the group's ethnic chauvinism (from Bloom's Giants and Dwarfs).

14. And I can't help but note that Jack Kirby (the son of immigrants) himself mocked this type of "Heritage American" hubris in the form of his Loyalist LARPing villain William Taurey (i.e. Tory). From Captain America #194 (Feb. 1976). The End.

12. One way to read Pynchon's oeuvre as a long secret history of the USA and technological modernity, both byproducts of a Calvinist and technocratic hubris that spells doom. This secret history has unflinchingly portrayed some of the darkest moments of the past, including genocidal wars.

Wiseman's background is primarily as a high-profile financier & business executive, not as a diplomat.
