Our @cais-research.bsky.social statement on interventions against misinformation was featured by one of Germany's most watched TV channels. We demand a reporting center that detects misinformation at an early stage and promptly makes it available to independent fact-checkers
The full statement in German: "Kurzfristig fordern wir, dass die Aufmerksamkeit der Öffentlichkeit gezielt auf Fakten und korrekte Informationen gelenkt wird, ohne Misinformationen zu wiederholen. Informationen, etwa zur Briefwahl, müssen proaktiv bereitgestellt und Falschbehauptungen schnell mit fundierten Argumenten widerlegt werden, bevor sie in Zweifel gezogen werden. Dafür braucht es eine Meldestelle, die Falschinformationen frühzeitig erfasst und unabhängigen Faktenchecker:innen zeitnah bereitstellt. Langfristig ist es entscheidend, politische Bildung und Medienkompetenz nachhaltig zu fördern. Nur so lässt sich Misinformation wirksam und dauerhaft entgegentreten."

The abstract reads: Motivated by ongoing criticism of the practical operationalization of ethical principles in artificial intelligence (AI) development, this study targets the ethical practice of AI developers in Germany. We focus on design as a key technological practice and developers as designers of AI-based systems when we investigate the socially, historically, and contextually influenced practice of AI ethics in the design process. We embed our methodology in value sensitive design (VSD), conduct design thinking workshops prototyping AI tools for hypothetical use cases, and ground our analysis on established ethical guidelines for AI. The results of this study reveal not only awareness of ethical principles in developers, more importantly, a strong influence of ethics on design decisions. Developers adapt their designs with technical interventions in favor of those using and being affected by their solutions. Our contribution is threefold: we establish a fine-grained categorization system of ethical principles based on AI ethics guidelines and VSD. We corroborate previous empirical research examining the prompted and self-reported influence and prioritization of ethical principles. Finally, we synthesize our findings with tangible design recommendations for AI ethics by design. We focus on recommendations for human involvement, privacy, and non-discrimination: encourage participatory AI design and avoid end-to-end automation in cases where humans are impacted; empower developers to integrate technical interventions from the onset of the design process to establish AI privacy by design; and support developers in emphasizing non-discriminatory AI, especially in contexts historically associated with discrimination.

Abstract: Trotz intensiver Forschung hinken wir aktuellen Entwicklungen im Bereich Desinformation oft hinterher. In diesem Vortrag erklären wir, warum der Umgang mit Desinformation so herausfordernd ist und welche konkreten Lösungsansätze es gibt. Obwohl wir inzwischen aus Perspektive der Forschung gesicherte Erkenntnisse über Verbreitung und Wirkung von Desinformationen haben und wirksame Präventions- wie auch Interventionsmaßnahmen auf vielen Ebenen diskutiert werden, laufen wir den tatsächlichen Entwicklungen und gesellschaftlichen Konsequenzen von Desinformation nur hinterher. Ein effektiver Umgang mit den unterschiedlichen Spielarten von Desinformation gelingt oft nicht. Mit Blick auf die aktuelle Forschung bieten wir einen Überblick über Lösungen gegen Desinformation. Dieser Talk soll die Begrifflichkeit für die öffentliche Debatte schärfen und die Frage adressieren: Was kann und soll als Desinformation verstanden werden? Darüber hinaus wollen wir diskutieren, warum der Umgang mit Desinformation so schwierig ist und welche individuellen, gesellschaftlichen und politischen Herausforderungen ihn so schwierig machen. Abschließend beantworten wir die Fragen: Was ist zu tun?

The advent of AI not only transforms working paradigms but also reframes epistemic cultures and the very nature of labor. This panel dives into these profound transformations to critically scrutinize how different types of AI are impacting labor sectors and the multifaceted implications accompanying AI advancements. A central topic we seek to explore revolves around the concept of "ghost work" (Gray & Suri 2019)—where work is seemingly done invisibly by technology, but have indeed humans present but hidden in the machines. Therefore, we ask: To whom is this work truly ghostly? What about human agency in machine worlds? What historical entanglements of "ghost work" with colonial legacies and labor exploitation can be found? Experts defined misinformation as false and misleading information, though views diverged on the importance of intentionality and what exactly constitutes misinformation. The most popular reason why people believe and share misinformation was partisanship, while lack of education was one of the least popular reasons. Experts were optimistic about the effectiveness of interventions against misinformation and supported system-level actions against misinformation, such as platform design changes and algorithmic changes. The most agreed-upon future direction for the field of misinformation was to collect more data outside of the United States.
