For those who want a more catered gradient, I might recco "stack shuffling" those cards so it's less likely for that to happen (back-to-back definitely still works for a highly-volatile infection)! Chabi and I knew what pacing we wanted out of playing this game, and so we bent the rules a bit. (:

*On the "longer game"

While the card was near the bottom, I got a few "infected queue" prompts in a row and then the card. I took the liberty to "cheat" ahead to tweak the pacing considering the scenes we were playing, but I knew we were low on cards, so I did so with care for that pacing, too.

They exchanged stories of their journey, their past, and their hopes for Val carrying on further... After 5ish days:

Estre's starlight succumbed to the blight she held,

And Valentin took on his sun-lit sword, shield, reached for the stars, and opened the door.

I would like to stress: PLAY WITH A REAL DOOR IF YOU CAN.

I was already in tears off the jump, hearing Chabi use Val's voice + the muffle = *chef's kiss*

Scratching/making other noises behind was fun and added so much.

Leaning your head on the door while talking to sib... You get really into it

I experience a lot of character bleed in my RP games, so the instant Chabi read the first prompt in char, I was in tears and locked in.

While we didn't use the game-time safety tools as-written (love that they're nearly diagetic too), we communicated extra pauses across the door when necessary.

Things we did:

- played like the infection took her magic away + magic did not work prior to her being put behind the door
- while some prompts highlight the bleak and sad situation, we managed to find laughs and nostalgia which was very needed and by design
- allowed ourselves to skip some prompts

Chabi and I had a lot of background to play with, but left room so we could still make things up for TTWH (after all this is an AU right?)

Estre was the Infected, Val was Survivor.

We played a particularly long game b/c the final card ended up near the bottom.*

Background: Estre and Val were long-lost siblings, but Val had his memories lost. Over a few in-game mths (& 2yrs of play this past wk!) have grown closer and accepting of this fate

We placed TTWH in a nebulous moment where they failed in a strike against the BBEG and Estre suffered a consequence.

Setting in short: Curse of Strahd is a Gothic-horror setting w/ a vampire overlord, and every monster under the horror genre you can probably find in there.

Contagious zombie is very much a thing that could happen to Estre and Valentin. We also considered a vampire bite. Ended up on a vague blight.

Lately, I have been enjoying using pre-existing chars in other longer-form games in smaller focused games. I played TTWH w/ my partner @hallwaysecrets.bsky.social, and we wanted to use our already existing sibling characters from our D&D Strahd home-game: Estre (star druid) and Valentin (paladin)

I couldn't keep going with it, even read some of the Manga early on when it was coming out, and I was just like... Getting such bad vibes. Seeing folks takes on the series later was like, oh that's what that feeling was.
