IMO it's mainly an essential exercise in setting the tone, which the sequel could then use to make a much better story – Shrek 1 is kind of uninspired narratively, but I think without its world-building, 2 wouldn't be what it is

Never too late to go back – I've had the occasional month off and it always feels like I'll never get back into it. And sure, it can be harder the first couple of times, but there's nothing wrong with going slowly. Obviously, taking a more extended time off is fine also!
