Victorian marriage:

A wife's "sphere" = the home
A wife's legal rights = zero

Charles Allott:
• Gave their son to his mother ✓
• Left the country ✓
• Provided no support ✓
• Kept Mary legally married ✓

Victorian education paradox:

Girls learned complex dress calculations (inches over corsets → yards of fabric, accounting for ruffles, trims, pattern matching).

But entered marriage unable to own the clothes they made.

In 1860, Mary Allott began copying recipes. Her husband had abandoned her, sailed to New Zealand. Legally: no rights, couldn't divorce, couldn't reclaim her son.

But in her recipe book, each attribution mapped a supporter.

Spotting institutional trauma patterns in families:

→ Emotional distance
→ Extreme self-reliance
→ Vulnerability avoidance

Adaptations, not personality.

After understanding comes choice.

You're not betraying ancestors by choosing different patterns. You're honouring their survival while recognising you face different circumstances.
They did what they had to. You get to do what you choose.

The video of 'Yet' documents something rarely recorded: a first-person account of childhood institutionalisation in 1930s-50s Britain.

Harry's voice matters. These children's stories matter.

He was 2. It would be 7 weeks, and three hospital wards before he saw her again.

He didn't go home for years.

Emotional distance in families rarely starts as cruelty. It usually starts as protection.

Someone was hurt badly enough that keeping distance felt safer.

Their children learned love doesn't include closeness.
